Appendix B · The First Stone — What One Person Can Lay This Week

5 minutes read.

The second address insisted that you are small but not nothing, and that no curve of death was ever bent by one pair of hands alone. Here, then, is not a program but a stone — concrete, modest, layable inside seven days. None of it is the whole roof. All of it is the roof. Choose one. Then, next week, choose another.

For your attention — take it back.

  • Reclaim one full hour from the watching market this week and give it, undivided, to a person who is actually in the room with you.
  • Move one daily reflex off the feed: read the thing, walk the block, call the person instead of scrolling past them.

For your body and your ground.

  • Plant one thing that feeds a bee or a bird — even a window box of native flowers — and refuse the neonicotinoid.
  • Find out where your water actually comes from, and one true thing about the soil within a mile of your door.
  • Learn one station of the old wheel: when, where you live, the light begins its return.

For your bonds.

  • Have one conversation you would normally avoid because it might be real.
  • Refuse, once, to change the subject when someone tells you the truth about the world — stay in the pause the sauna could not hold.
  • Tell one person you are glad they exist, and mean it.

For the tending.

  • Make one act of care visible this week — name it, honor it, count it — in your own household, where the wider world keeps no column for it.
  • Check on the one person you know who is carrying more than a person can carry. Do not offer advice. Offer to carry a corner.

For coordination — the actual work.

  • Find the thing near you that already governs some part of itself — a co-op, a land trust, a mutual-aid group, a congregation that still keeps a commons — and show up once. If none exists within reach, gather the three people who would help you begin one.
  • Make your conscience cost you something small and concrete this week, and notice that you can bear the cost.

For the long view.

  • Spend ten honest minutes thinking past the next quarter — at the scale of the children not yet born, who will inherit whatever we point the machine toward — and decide one thing differently because of them.

Lay one stone. That is the whole method, and it is enough to begin.

The Roots of This Volume

Sources for the figures in §2, §3, and §4, and the thinkers named throughout, so the reader may verify rather than trust.

The living world (§2).

  • Birds. Rosenberg et al., "Decline of the North American avifauna," Science (2019): ~2.9 billion fewer breeding birds (~29%) since 1970. Rachel Carson, Silent Spring (1962).
  • Bees. Project Apis m. / American Beekeeping Federation / Honey Bee Health Coalition (2025): ~62% average commercial colony loss and ~1.6 million colonies lost, June 2024–March 2025 — the worst on record. ≈ $17 billion in US agricultural value; pollinators reproduce >75% of flowering plants and ~35% of crops; neonicotinoid–Varroa synergy (Beyond Pesticides, 2025).
  • Insects. Hallmann et al., PLOS ONE (2017) — the Krefeld study: >75% decline in flying-insect biomass over 27 years in protected areas.
  • Soil. The "60 harvests" figure (2014 FAO remark) has no rigorous basis as a single global number (Ritchie / Our World in Data; James Wong, New Scientist); real, uneven degradation persists.
  • Farmers. ~300,000 farmer suicides in India over ~two decades (NCRB). Causation contested: Shiva/Navdanya vs. Gruère, Qaim et al.
  • Water. UNESCO / UN-Water, World Water Development Report 2024. Foreign farmland-and-water acquisition in Africa is real but the China-specific scale is overstated (Deborah Brautigam; Land Matrix's downward revisions).
  • Diet. T. Colin Campbell, The China Study (2005), and its critics: direction sound, strongest claim overstated.
  • Chemistry, plastics & EMF. IARC (WHO) 2015 on glyphosate (Group 2A) vs. EFSA/EPA/ECHA/JMPR. Microplastics in every placenta and testicle tested (Campen / UNM, Toxicological Sciences, 2024) and accumulating in the brain — ~a spoon's worth, up ~50% in eight years (Nature Medicine, 2025). RF-EMF: IARC Group 2B ("possibly"); harm at ordinary exposures not established — a genuine but unsettled concern.

The state of 2026 (§3).

  • War. CFR & ACLED Conflict Watchlist 2026; CFR Global Conflict Tracker; International Crisis Group. ~20 active conflicts; Sudan ~150,000 dead, ~12 million displaced.
  • Economy. BLS CPI (May 2026); CNN / Cleveland Fed (record-low sentiment, decade-wide wealth gap); Treasury/Census & Morgan Stanley on housing.
  • AI & labor. Challenger, Gray & Christmas; Stanford HAI; BCG; McKinsey. EU AI Act vs. the US federal preemption posture.
  • Climate. Copernicus / WMO / Berkeley Earth; World Weather Attribution (heat the deadliest extreme of 2025).
  • Overdose & suicide. CDC / NVSS provisional data (peak ~110,000 in 2022; >25% drop in 2024; falling through 2025 toward ~70,000). Suicide at record totals in recent years (CDC).
  • DNA. 23andMe Chapter 11 (March 2025); ~15 million genomes as a bankruptcy asset; the Regeneron bid and states' suits; sale to the TTAM nonprofit (July 2025); HIPAA's gap for direct-to-consumer genetic data.
  • Social credit. MERICS, Asia Society, Yale's Jeremy Daum on the myth of a unified citizen score; the real corporate-credit / blacklist apparatus and surrounding surveillance; the March 2025 State Council directive.
  • Fertility & loneliness. Global fertility ~2.2 (UN World Population Prospects 2024; Pew, 2025); below replacement in ~two-thirds of countries; Lancet/IHME projects 198 of 204 below replacement by 2100; declining sperm counts (Levine/Swan et al., Human Reproduction Update, 2022). U.S. Surgeon General's 2023 advisory on loneliness.
  • Trust. Epstein Files Transparency Act (Nov 2025) and the DOJ's delayed, redacted, partial releases (CBS, CNN, PBS). Whistleblowers: Ellsberg (1971), Manning (2010), Snowden (2013), Assange (WikiLeaks).

Intimacy and the commodified body (§4). The "sex recession": General Social Survey data analyzed by the Institute for Family Studies (2025) — weekly sexual activity among US adults 18–64 down from ~55% (1990) to ~37% (2024); year-long sexlessness among young adults roughly doubled to ~24% since 2010; in-person weekly social time among young adults more than halved since 2010. Read alongside the fertility and loneliness sources above.

The lineage (§10). R. Buckminster Fuller, Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth (1969) and Utopia or Oblivion (1969). Fritjof Capra, The Turning Point: Science, Society, and the Rising Culture (1982).

[Figures in §3 are time-stamped to mid-2026 and should be refreshed before publication. The forward door remains set to Vol VII — the Seven Initiates of a BOW, where §4's "second meaning" and the work of intimacy open fully.]
